Dark colours can completely change the character of a home, but using them on eaves takes confidence. For this exterior painting project in Raymond Terrace, the homeowner wanted to move away from the usual white trim and create a stronger, more contemporary finish.
The Domino Effect: A Dark Exterior Transformation
The homeowner had a clear vision for dark eaves, gutters, fascias and downpipes, although she was understandably unsure about committing to such an unusual choice. Light-coloured eaves are common, so applying a deep colour overhead can feel like a significant step.
After discussing how the colour would work with the existing brickwork, tiled roof and dark roller shutters, we encouraged her to trust her original idea. Dulux Domino brought the different exterior elements together and gave the home a bold, unified appearance.
Preparing the Exterior for Repainting
A dramatic colour change still depends on careful preparation. The exterior was pressure cleaned before loose and flaking paint was scraped back. Nail holes and small gaps were filled, and exposed areas were undercoated where required before the finishing coats were applied.
Drop sheets and protective coverings were used around the garden and adjoining surfaces throughout the work.
Choosing the Right Finish
The colour was consistent across the project, but the sheen level was chosen separately for each surface. Dulux Domino in a gloss finish was used on the gutters, fascias and downpipes because the homeowner liked the extra shine and the way it defined these architectural details.
We recommended a matt finish for the eaves. Removing the overhead shine helped the dark colour feel softer and more continuous, allowing the eaves to appear as though they extended further rather than reflecting light back toward the viewer.
More Than Gutters, Fascias and Eaves
The work extended around the home and included the veranda ceiling, the rear extension box gutter and six downpipes. Carrying Domino across these elements prevented the new colour scheme from looking disconnected and created a consistent finish from every angle.
A Bold Idea Brought to Life
The completed repaint shows how well a dark colour can work on eaves when it is considered as part of the entire exterior. Domino complements the existing brickwork, roof and shutters while giving the house a stronger and more distinctive appearance.
Most importantly, the homeowner was very happy that she followed through with the idea she had originally imagined.
Finished in Dulux Domino, with matt eaves and gloss gutters, fascias and downpipes.
